BE LONGING

Installation. oil on canvas, various sizes

Laura Boogaard, Dordrecht, 1985

I have lived all my life on the banks of rivers. In a period in which I was looking for new connections but at the same time the world had to be kept on distance, I started combing downstream. Traces—photos, diaries, found objects, family stories, artifacts—took me further and further down the stream into the past. I explored the concepts of desire, nostalgia, connection, belonging,  appertainement. Connections arose between experiences in the present and memories from the near and distant past. My works are a compilation of the traces that have washed ashore, downstream.

VISIONS OF SATYA YUGA

Installation, acryl on canvas, various sizes

Cindy Dieteren, Geleen, 1981

The phenomenon and experience of time has always been a mystery to me. Connecting deeply with something or someone disconnects from linear time experience and vice versa. In this series of paintings I got inspired by the idea of Yuga cycles as described in ancient Hindu texts, where 4 different world ages are assumed to alternate. Kali Yuga, the fourth and worst of Yugas is believed to be the present age, which is full of conflict. We may be close to return to the first age, Satya Yuga: the age of truth, when humanity is governed by intrinsic goodness and every manifestation is close to the purest ideal. Satya Yuga is also sometimes named the "Golden Age". In the layers of my paintings i am moving between dark and light, but always with hints of gold.
